The gel is quite different from acrylic and therefore should not be confused. The materials used in the production of gel nails are a gel. For acrylic nails, liquid monomer and polymer are used. Gels come in different colors and require curing after application. The major process of curing or hardening gel is under a UV light. The UV can either be a lamp or a conventional bulb.

The process of UV curing simply explained refers to the hardening up that occurs when gel nails are exposed to UV lights. When the gel is exposed to UV, the photo-initiators contained in the gel will begin to break up. This leads to the formation of free radicals that attack double bonds present in the gel molecules. This leads to polymerization reaction which involves all the molecules of the gel. Gel often contain oligomers and acrylic monomers which come together to form long linking chains during polymerization. This process is called cross-linking. These long linked chains are the secret to hard and chemically resistant gel. At the end of a gel application, there is often a thin layer called inhibition layer. This layer is removed by the use of a lint-free wiped dipped in alcohol (concentrate alcohol).

The process of gel application usually ends with applying cuticle oil on all the fingers. Some people may prefer to use moisturizers or natural oil. This process helps to nourish the cuticle after exposure to alcohol.

The gel nail polish has grown over the years. There are just a lot of colors and brands to choose from. It has become almost a trend to use a gel polish after a regular manicure. A professionally done nail polish is very healthy and appears beautiful.

The gel nail remains one of the most popular beauty trends. Recently, the use of nail polish is no longer a salon thing alone. With DIY kits available for sale on the shelf, the possibilities of what you can achieve are limitless.
