We all love a great nail art design but cannot always get to the nail salon. Creating masterful nail art designs can be done (super easy), even if some of the professional tools are not available to you. Household items, hair accessories and other items that you could get your hands on; can be used to get that perfect almost-Picasso look.

We found 14 nail hacks that you could use to get a superb looking nail art design, easily.

1. How to stop your nail from smearing

Remove excess top coat from your nail brush in the bottle. Once you have the right amount of polish on your brush, glide the brush across your nail design. Do not let the brush touch your nail, only the top coat formula needs to touch your fingernail.

2. Avoiding bubbles forming on your fingernails.

Roll the closed bottle between your fingers so that the liquid is able to mix. The trick is to roll the bottle between your hands and not to shake the bottle. Shaking increases the chances of bubbles forming in your nail polish.

3. Removing ugly stickers from nail polish bottles

If you’re struggling to see the contents of the bottle of nail polish because there’s a half peeled sticker attached to the bottle; you can remove it. Soak the bottle in nail polish remover and use a toothpick to gently pick off the sticky paper from the bottle. Dip a cotton wool ball in the nail polish remover to wipe away the last bit of glue and sticky paper.

4. To keep your fingers and cuticles clean when applying nail polish

If you’re applying nail art with nail polish to your fingernails; keeping the surrounding skin and cuticle clean is easy. Use liquid latex to protect the areas that you do not want covered in nail polish. Once you are done with your art designs; gently pull off the dried latex and you’re left with a squeaky clean finger.

If you have a latex sin allergy, use latex-free skin barriers to help keep your nail art on your nails and from your skin.

5. Creating a snake skin design

To create a snake skin design on your fingernails; use a piece of bath loofah and place it over your colored base coat. Sponge nail polish of your choice over the bath loofah to give you the snake skin effect.

6. Removing excess oil from nails with a natural ingredient

Before painting your nails, removing excess grime and oil can be done with a natural ingredient such as vinegar. Dip the tip of a cotton bud in the vinegar and rub it across your fingernails.

7. Using hair accessories to create nail art

Have you ever watched a tutorial and found that the nail technician is using a dotting tool, and you don’t have one? Use a bobby pin to dip into the nail polish that you intend dotting on your nails.

8. How to get perfect stripes on your nails

Use clear tape and cut out thin strips. Apply the thin strips where you’re going to paint your lines on your nails. Paint over the entire nail and allow the polish to dry. Once dry, pull the strips away and you’re left with the perfect nails.

9. Create your own 3D nail art decorations

Mould your designs out of oven hardening modelling clay. Once you’ve shaped them, place them on a baking sheet and bake them according to the time on the packaging.  You can decorate them with nail polish of your choice. Once dry, glue to your fingernails and you’ve created your own manicure.

10. Create your own color changing nail polish

Use color changing pigment to create your own nail polish with color changing capabilities. To be able to add to your clear nail polish; use a funnel. A home made one with paper works well. Shake the bottle so that the pigment mixes well.

Another tip: It’s be super fun if you use a glow in the dark pigment to your clear nail polish.

11. Create nail polish decal stickers

Paint different color nail polish strips onto a sandwich bag. Allow it to dry for a few hours or even overnight. Peel them off the sandwich bag and use a shape cutter to create the shapes that you’ll apply to your nails. We find a star shape the most adorable. Apply a top coat to your nail polish. Pick the tiny shapes up with a dotting tool and apply to the wet top coat. Seal all the decals on your nails with the final top coat.

12. Adding watercolor designs

Use a marker to create flowers on your fingernails. They don’t have to be perfect flowers, just draw marks so that the ink is present on your fingernails. Use a thin brush dipped in rubbing alcohol to lightly dab across the markings into a shape that you like. Finish the look off with a superb quality top coat to seal in the uniqueness on your nails.

13. How to remove glitter from your nails

Removing glitter from your nails is not an easy task especially if you don’t have a peel off base coat on. Soak a cotton ball in acetone and wrap your fingernails with it. Then, use tin foil to secure the acetone drenched balls on your fingernails. Let it soak for about 10 minutes and check on whether the nail polish and glitter are coming off, if not leave for an additional 5 minutes. Once all the nail polish and glitter are removed, hydrate your nails and cuticles with cuticle oil.

14. Creating a splatter nail design

Creating a splatter nail design is super easy by using a drinking straw. Protect your skin by using liquid latex or latex-free covers. Dip a straw in the nail polish of your choice and blow from the other end, holding the straw over your fingernails. Once you satisfied with your look, allow to dry and remove the latex (or latex-free covers), from your fingers.
